Fever is one of the most common symptoms of various ailments – from the common cold or flu to even much more serious illnesses. If we observe it at home, it is a sign that something bad is happening to our body. It is then necessary to take appropriate measures so that the disease does not develop further. If you just feel weak, have a headache and have trouble concentrating, then you probably have a common cold. After all, it is not unusual in this period of the year, because the body of each of us is then exposed to such ailments. It is important then to properly care for your body.
What is a fever?
To be able to fight a fever effectively, you must first understand what it really is. In fact, it is not in itself a threat to our lives – on the contrary, it is theoretically a positive signal that tells us that the immune system is functioning efficiently and is trying to fight the disease. Fever is primarily manifested by increased body temperature. It can be measured with a thermometer; if the temperature rises significantly above the norm (36.6 C), then we have cause for concern. The so-called significant fever starts at 39.5 C – below this is a slight fever, although even in this case it is worth starting to counteract.
Diet and fever
If you notice a fever, it’s better to take a day or two off work as soon as possible and stay in bed. Thanks to this, the body will be able to quickly deal with threats without additional burdens. In addition, what you eat during this difficult period is extremely important. By providing your body with the right nutrients, you can significantly support the work of its immune system and make the fever pass much faster.
Vitamins should be the basic dietary component during fever. Vitamin C is particularly important here because it affects the body’s immune system – it is worth taking care of its sufficient intake not only during fever because it is great in preventing many diseases. Vitamin C is found in a large amount in some fruits and vegetables, and these should be the most important during fever. Among the best sources of vegetables are peppers (especially green ones, but other varieties are also recommended), cabbage, tomatoes, onions and potatoes. As for fruit, strawberries, currants, apples, lemons, oranges, pears, plums and kiwi are the best bets here. All these products are low in calories, so you can consume them in large quantities without any issues. Fruit and vegetables also have other properties, invaluable when fighting a fever. They help in cleansing the body of toxins and harmful substances, which promotes faster recovery. These products also contain a lot of valuable minerals that also support the proper functioning of our whole body.
If the body is to deal efficiently with threats, it needs a lot of energy – that’s why we should not limit ourselves to fruits and vegetables. At least once a day, it’s worth putting on a really nutritious and quite abundant dinner that will provide the body with the right amount of protein. Meat products are most desirable here, but not all. It’s best to opt for lean meat – e.g. chicken – prepared in the right way. Instead of frying in fat, you should try grilling or baking. Porridge or rice will be a great addition to dinner, in addition to a vegetable salad. Even people on a slimming diet should not limit themselves. If you eat really healthy, then you can opt for hearty meals that provide a lot of energy to your body – when the fever is in your body it is very important to take care of sufficient energy intake.
