Watermelon – mostly only water, but acts like Viagra

Watermelon comes from South America and is classified as a cucurbitaceous plant. Although it feels best in warm climates, its special variety, resistant to low temperatures, is also grown in Poland. Although it is sweet, it refreshes and cools, and has many more properties.

Watermelon with low calories comes great power

In 100 g of fruit, there is only 30 kcal. Such a portion also provides 112 mg of potassium, 568 IU of vitamin A and 10 mg of magnesium. But it is not vitamins and minerals that make watermelon so special.

The biggest advantage of watermelon is the significant content of antioxidants – lycopene (it has more of it than tomato), beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin, which slow down the aging process and protect against some types of cancers.

Additionally, they prevent the oxidation of cholesterol, so the pressure in veins and arteries does not rise to dangerous levels. Their ability to fight free radicals makes blood vessels stronger and more resistant to damage.

Watermelon for the heart

Due to the content of potassium and magnesium, watermelon should be eaten by people with too high blood pressure and problems with the elasticity of blood vessels. Potassium helps to get rid of sodium faster (its extensive amount in our organism is one of the main factors responsible for hypertension) and prevents the development of changes typical of atherosclerosis. However, in order for the body to retain potassium and get rid of sodium, adequate magnesium concentration is also needed.

The vitamins A and C present in watermelon protect against heart attack or stroke, the latter being one of the strongest antioxidants.

Watermelon for beautiful body and skin

Watermelon is a valuable food for every athlete. It contains citrulline, which expands blood vessels, increases muscle volume, and above all neutralizes ammonia, which is responsible for muscle pain right after training. Antioxidants and vitamin A, in addition to anti-aging, shield the skin from excessive exposure to the sun, also accelerate the healing of skin lesions.

Watermelon almost like … viagra?

What is good for athletes turns out to be helpful in erectile dysfunction. Researchers from Texas A&M University’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Centre have found that citrulline contained in watermelon can act almost identically to the active ingredient from the famous blue pill. The same way it dilates blood vessels, and the same way it can eliminate erection problems.

Watermelon – be careful!

Despite so many advantages, watermelon needs to be treated with caution. This applies especially to diabetics. The high glycemic index of the fruit is to blame. The higher it is, the faster the sugar level in the body rises, and in this case, it can have dangerous consequences.
