Researchers studied the anabolic effects of oxandrolone, lean body mass (LBM), muscle volume, amount of fat and maximum strength, and determined the durability of effects after stopping anabolic treatment.
Thirty-two healthy men between the ages of 60 and 87 were randomly assigned to receive 20 mg oxandrolone / day (n = 20) or placebo (n = 12) for 12 weeks. Body composition was determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and magnetic resonance imaging. Muscle strength was also examined up to 1 repetition (1 RM) at the beginning of the study and after 12 weeks. Body composition (DEXA) and strength were then evaluated at 12 weeks after discontinuation of treatment (week 24).
Week 12 oxandrolone
Oxandrolone increased strength
In terms of the effect on adipose tissue
Twelve weeks after discontinuation of oxandrolone (in week 24), dry weight and strength were lost, but most of the total fat loss and torso (-1.5 ± 1.8 and -1.0 ± 1.1 kg) remained.
Conclusions Oxandrolone caused a short-term improvement in the amount of dry body weight, muscle volume and strength (hypertrophy), while reducing the amount of body fat, including the torso. The anabolic effects were lost after 12 weeks after discontinuation of oxandrolone, while fat loss was preserved.
