Niacin, or otherwise vitamin B3, PP or nicotinic acid is an extremely important substance that is responsible for the proper functioning of the whole body, including the brain and peripheral nervous system, as well as for the synthesis of sex hormones and for the production of insulin, cortisol and thyroxine.     Niacin – how does it work?

    Vitamin PP is one of the elements that creates very important coenzymes: NADP and NAD. They are combined with the protein, which creates an enzyme – oxidoredukase. This compound is indispensable for the proper course of the metabolism process of macronutrients, i.e. proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Niacin supplementation is extremely important because it performs a number of health-relevant functions. First of all, thanks to its use, the number of produced neutrophils – white blood cells, responsible for the destruction of microorganisms increases. In addition, nicotinic acid increases the activity of the mitochondrial nuclei, resulting in improved mental health, reduced stress and increased self-confidence.

    However, the properties of niacin do not end there. Vitamin B3 regulates the production and secretion of gastric juice, which on the one hand improves digestion, and on the other eliminates the risk of gastrointestinal problems, including ulcers and peracidosis. In addition, niacin facilitates detoxification, that is, removing impurities from the body. This is a very important function, because lingering toxins can be the cause of many diseases, as well as obesity. However, the effect on the secretion of hormones is important because in this way the hormonal balance of the body is regulated, which reduces the risk of developing diabetes, infertility and many other problems. Nicotinic acid also participates in the synthesis of red blood cells, which are necessary for the transport of hemoglobin, and thus for the process of breathing. Vitamin PP reduces bad LDL cholesterol while increasing the level of good – HDL cholesterol. All this is also crowned by the good effect of niacin on the condition of hair, skin and nails.

    An interesting fact is that scientists have discovered yet another property of vitamin PP, namely to improve the ability of immune cells to fight Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the previously mentioned effect on the synthesis of neutrophils also allows killing and absorption of harmful microorganisms. This is an extremely important discovery, because it may soon be possible to completely replace niacin with antibiotic drugs in the fight against staphylococcal infections.

    It is also worth mentioning the symptoms of niacin deficiencies. One of them is pelagra, a disease called also Lombard erythema. It is manifested, among other things, by the redness and roughness of the skin in places exposed to sun exposure or abrasions. In addition, pelagra also causes exfoliation and blisters, even turning into ulcers and dark brown discolorations on the face, neck and hands. Other symptoms are problems associated with the digestive system, for example diarrhea, and also appear disorders of the nervous system. The effects of a deficiency of niacin include also hormonal disorders and weakened immunity, and even anemia, thrush or serious skin inflammation.

    Niacin has a number of important functions in the body and protects us against many diseases, so its supplementation can be indispensable, especially in the case of little-varied and low in nutrients, unadapted to the predisposition of the body’s diet. A proper dose of vitamin PP for an adult person is oscillating at 15 milligrams a day, a little more should be taken by pregnant and nursing women, and the maximum dose is 35 milligrams. A lot depends on the state of health, the body’s needs and the parameters of the receiving person.
