Liver detox diet – for whom?
The purpose of the liver detoxification diet is to provide this organ with all the nutrients it needs to regenerate, and to avoid, or completely exclude, the lifestyle factors that damage it. This model of nutrition has a preventive character. It is supposed to prevent further damage to the organ, which can lead to failure, and also support its repair. There are many factors that adversely affect the functioning of the liver. These include, among others:

- viral agents (viral hepatitis)
- unhealthy diet – with too little or too much protein, high in processed foods, heavy, fatty foods, sweets and sugar, low intake of vegetables;
- fatty foods that are hard to digest
- toxic agents (heavy metals)
- autoimmune diseases
Lifestyle is strongly correlated with liver health. The liver detoxification diet should be used by people who, with an unhealthy diet and overusing stimulants and drugs, can damage the delicate structure of this vital organ. The assumptions of this model of nutrition are based on generally known principles of healthy eating.
How to cleanse the liver?
An unhealthy lifestyle can lead to liver damage. By following the right dietary rules, we can effectively help the liver to detoxify and perform its vital functions. To facilitate the detoxification and regeneration of the liver, the following rules should be followed:
- Alcohol should be excluded from the diet or its consumption (in any form) should be significantly reduced.
- In the liver cleansing diet, it is recommended to eat 4-5 small meals a day.
- The last meal should be planned for 2-3 hours before bedtime.
- Fast food and all highly processed products, such as chips, should be removed from the menu.
- The diet should be supplemented with plenty of seasonal vegetables and fruits, served raw, cooked or pureed
- It is important to properly hydrate the body, it is recommended to drink at least 1.5 litres of fluids daily – with a large proportion of still mineral water, green tea, herbal teas, vegetable juices.
- You should exclude sweets and sugar from your diet and limit salt intake.
Liver detoxification – what diet for liver detoxification?
Protein is one of the basic macronutrients that have a structural function. It is an important part of the diet in liver detoxification. This organ, in order to regenerate, needs a building block in the form of protein. Food sources of this macronutrient are:
- dairy products
These products provide complete protein – protein that contains all essential amino acids, including those that the body is unable to produce. In the case of liver and protein does not work by the principle of the more, but the better. If the amount of protein is too low we will hinder the process of liver regeneration. If we plan too high a level of this macronutrient, we can overload this organ.
It is recommended that the optimal amount of protein in the diet is equal to, or slightly exceeds the physiological norm. This means that we should provide the body with 1-1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.
Herbs and medicines for liver detoxification
In the process of detoxification and regeneration of the liver, it is worth using the medicinal properties of herbs known in natural medicine. They can be taken in the form of infusions, decoctions and supplements. Medicinal plants that can help improve liver health include:
- milk thistle
- liquorice root
Herbs for the liver have a cholagogic effect, i.e. they increase the secretion of bile by the liver. This facilitates digestion, especially of fatty and hard to digest foods.
Effective liver medicines also contain other biologically active substances, such as silymarin or cynarin, which improve the regeneration of hepatocytes, i.e. liver cells. It is worth noting that the use of choleretic herbs should be avoided in people with liver disease that progresses with bile stasis.
