1. Type II collagen – description

Type II collagen (CII) is an element that is part of human articular cartilage. A variety of this compound is very common and available on the market as shark gelatin. Due to its flexibility and high tolerance of stretching, it occurs within anatomical tendons and is one of the basic building materials of the skin.

2. Operation and application

In the human body it is responsible for the stabilization of internal organs in the correct position, and is also one of the protective elements. It is also worth mentioning the issue of its activity within the immune system – it prevents the development of pathogenic bacteria, cancer cells and toxic compounds. Unfortunately, despite the good absorption from the digestive system, it has a low concentration of amino acids and is devoid of L-cysteine.

The primary use of collagen II is pain and inflammation within the musculoskeletal system (eg cartilage and joint capsules, tendons or ligaments). In addition, it is very often used as an element of prevention and therapy of pathologies such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Very often it can be found as an element of mandatory supplementation in athletes in order to prevent injuries and to strengthen their movement apparatus.

Collagen is also used in the cosmetics industry – it is both an ingredient in preparations such as creams and anti-wrinkle ointments, but it is successfully used in the case of surgical operations (eg mouth filling).

3. Supplementation with collagen

Collagen in hydrolysed form should be taken in a daily dose of about 10 g for skin health and some joint problems. The preparation can be taken both before a meal, as well as during it. It is worth knowing that collagen should not be used as a protein substitute due to its lower efficiency and weak amino acid profile.

In the case of non-denatured collagen used in osteoarthritis, we use single doses up to a maximum of 40 mg. This type of preparation can be taken both on an empty stomach and during a meal.

The effectiveness of collagen taken orally is rather debatable …

Practically like any supplement. It might well be assumed that eating a large amount of gelatin will speed up the regeneration of joint cartilage and collagen;) There is something else for everyone.
